Rules of Tournament
• Pool Play format of games played with top 32 teams advancing to a double elimination tournament. Game times are 40 minutes for round robin, and double elimination games, then no time limit for the semifinals and final.
All teams (4 members) must be near the court of play 5 minutes prior to the start of the match in order to start on time for all Sunday games. A team forfeits the game after 10 minutes from the start time if they do not show. A team may request to play with three players during pool play only.
• Practice throws from each end will be permitted.
• Captains will toss a coin to determine who goes 1st and which color. Be ready to play bocce as there are 30 second time limits between throws which allows enough time to request a measurement and resume the game.
• The team that reaches 12 points will be declared the winner in the round robin games, and double elimination games until the semi-finals and finals which are to 16 point.
• In the event the match is still in process after the allotted time, the frame will be completed and the team with the most points is declared the winner or a tie declared.
• An additional frame will be permitted if the score is tied in the double elimination tournament. Pool Play games will be counted as ties.
• Each team captain will sign the official score card after each match. Failure to do so in a timely manner will result in a forfeit
• Seeding into the 32 team double elimination tournament will be based upon the W-L-T records and then by total points scored, total points against during the round robin. A coin flip will break any ties concerning seeding.
• All balls must be delivered in an underhand manner before crossing the foul line. Fouls will result in penalties being assessed after the team has fouled on the second occasion. Only one person on the court at time of delivery. Exception to this rule is during the pool play tournament for those with physical difficulties.
• Two 30 second time outs will be allotted per match per team.
• A palina toss will be attempted by a team no more than twice. In the event they are unsuccessful, the other team may toss the palina. If this results in a failed placement of the palina, the palina is placed in the center of the court an equal distance from the side boards and the center and back lines. The palina toss to be legal must be between the center line and far foul line and one foot off of the side rails.
• Only one substitute may play per team per game except due to injury and recognition of said injury by staff. If a player subs for one team in the tournament, he/she may not play or sub for another team.
• If the palina is thrown before time expires the frame continues to be played even if the palina not put into play to avoid starting the frame.
• Substitutes may enter a match at the end of a frame.
• If the team is unable to determine the “in” ball, he/she may measure at any time. However, they may not measure to determine the 2nd “in” ball while other balls remain to be played. Measuring may only occur to determine the closest ball.
• Only one player per team shall be permitted beyond the foul line for coaching and/or measuring. At the time of delivery during the single elimination tournament only one player may be on the court. And all players must be behind the end line (keep in mind the 30 sec. delivery rule)
• Measurements will only be made by one player from each team during the tournament.
• If a team A agrees that the other team has the point and the balls in contention do not move, then team A forfeits its right to a measurement and the point(s) are awarded to the other team.
• In the event a ball is accidentally moved (while balls remain to be played) and that ball is in contention, a dead frame is declared. If a ball is moved that is not in contention, the ball will placed it back in its original spot.
• In the event the player inadvertently moves the palina, a dead frame will result unless all balls have been thrown and both teams clearly are able to acknowledge which team was “in.”
• Unsportsmanlike conduct will not be tolerated. Behavior deemed as poor sportsmanship may lead to a team's disqualification.
• Footwear is encouraged to be worn while playing bocce for safety and health-related reasons.
• Teams will refer all questions and/or rule clarifications to the Tournament Director or official so designated for the Bocce Classic.
• in the event of inclement weather and/or time constraints, the Sunday double elimination may go to a modified single elimination.
• All decisions made by the Tournament Director are final.
